My RAHC experience - Linda Feniger, Dentist

Melbourne Dentist Linda Feniger has written about her recent experience working with RAHC in the Top End. Linda has done placements in Milikapiti, Wadeye and Gunbalanya.

Having just returned home from my second RAHC placement, it is only now, while sitting within the confines of a city dental environment that I can truly appreciate what a life changing experience I have just had.

After meeting my DA, Tamsey, on the plane to Darwin, we set off in anticipation of a great experience in the remote communities of Milikapiti, Wadeye and Gunbalanya.

Our one day in Darwin involved orientation with the Department of Health Oral Health team, as well as pooling dental and food supplies for our first week before an early morning flight to Melville Island the next morning.

We were immediately struck by the friendliness of the community and the helpfulness of the multidisciplinary team in the community health centre setting where we were working. This experience was repeated in all the places we visited.

Our dental surgery was large, well equipped and very pleasant to work in. We learnt much about the culture of the community from the wonderful stories our patients shared about their daily lives, their hunting and fishing and their art which was proudly displayed in the magnificent art and cultural centre.

Throughout our placement our welfare was a priority to the RAHC and Department of Health Oral Health staff who attended to our every need.

I encourage anyone who has an interest to take advantage of this great opportunity.
