National Reconciliation Week (NRW) celebrates and promotes relationships between Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and other Australians. It is an opportunity to learn about shared histories, cultures and achievements whilst exploring ways to contribute to national reconciliation efforts.
The 2022 theme is ‘Be Brave. Make Change.’
It challenges all Australians to be brave and take on the unfinished business of reconciliation to make change for the benefit of all Australians.
NRW runs from 27 May to 3 June annually. The first and the last day of the event commemorate two significant milestones:
- 27 May - The 1967 referendum saw over 90% of Australian voters choose ‘Yes’ to including Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples in the census and giving the Australian Government the power to make laws for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.
- 3 June - On this day in 1992, the Australian High Court delivered the Mabo decision, legally recognising that Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples are the Traditional Owners and Custodians of lands and paving the way for Native Title.
