National Reconciliation Week (NRW) is a time for all Australians to learn about our shared histories, cultures, and achievements, and to explore how each of us can contribute to achieving reconciliation in Australia.
The 2023 theme is Be a Voice for Generations.
Reconciliation Australia CEO Karen Mundine says that the 2023 theme calls on Australians to honour the work of generations past who fought for justice in Australia.
National Reconciliation Week runs from 27 May to 3 June annually. These dates commemorate two significant milestones in the reconciliation journey:
- 27 May - The 1967 referendum saw over 90% of Australian voters choose Yes to including Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples in the census and giving the Australian Government the power to make laws for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.
- 3 June - On this day in 1992, the Australian High Court delivered the Mabo decision, legally recognising that Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples are the Traditional Owners and Custodians of lands and paving the way for Native Title.
National Reconciliation Week provides focus on working towards the goal of an equitable and reconciled Australia.
